It Has Been a Blast

After being a part of the Sports Fix on 90.5 KSHU, I am leaving the show because I have graduated from SHSU to hopefully go on to bigger and better things. I have enjoyed every minute of my time at KSHU and The Sports Fix, hoping the experience can one day pay off in the form of a job.

I have handed of the reigns to Boggan and I understand Andy will be taking my place starting in Spring 2010. I do not know when the show will be due to the potential change in format the station goes through, but I am sure this blog will keep everyone up to date.

Keep listening and I will be archiving shows on here soon!

Thank you all.

Even the Lions didn't go 0-18

Wednesday night, the New Jersey Nets dropped their 18th straight game, in 18 games played this season: something no other team in the history of the NBA has been able to accomplish. Congratulations to the Nets on losing their first 18 games. Too bad they don't play "Celebration" after losses at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford because that song has yet to see the light of day.

How appropriate in the photo above of two disgruntled Nets fans, they are wearing jerseys of former players, one of which was on the court Wednesday, Jason Kidd, who was not wearing a bag on his head like this guy, instead he helped the Mavericks to their 14th win, going for 16 points, 10 assists and 8 boards in the 117-101 win. It was far out of reach even before halftime. Which saw the Nets down by 27 points and the Mavs hold it to that mark after three quarters.

The Nets though, will continue to allow the WNBA-size crowd that shows up to their games to suffer or who knows get their first win of the season. It might be the biggest deal for a win ever in New Jersey for any team all calendar year, they have the Bobcats next then their cross-river rival (if that's legit to say), the Knickerbockers at MSG.

Good luck to you Nets, may the Frank still be with you.

Sports Fix WILL RETURN!

**UPDATED**

The Sports Fix will be back on your radio dial LIVE from the Dan Rather Building on the campus of Sam Houston State on Wednesday, September 2. There will NOT be a show on August 26th.

We look forward to having you join us for our first show. Andrew and Boggan will be back from 3-6pm covering all the sports news from around the Huntsville area from the Bearkats to the Hornets and all news from the Houston area.

Of course we'll also hit on the big news of the week and we'll hope to throw in a few interviews with some players/coaches.

The show is back for its third year on the radio. We hope to be better than ever. Started by Kevin and Charlie in Fall 2007, we look to go all out for our third year on the radio.

So tune in Wednesday, August 26 at 3:00 on 90.5 KSHU for the Sports Fix with Andrew and Boggan.

About our hosts:

Andrew

A senior at SHSU and a member of the KSHU-FM radio station since 2006, Andrew quickly made his way into a prominent role with the station. Starting as a producer with the play-by-play staff, he worked up to an on-air role as a color analyst for baseball in Spring 2007. In Spring 2008, Andrew offered to be the producer for the show, allowing him to get on the air occasionally. He provided Kevin and Charlie with information for the show and began doing Sports Fix updates in the Fall of 2008. He also has begun recording the show and hopes to podcast the show one day.

In Fall 2008, Andrew became the Sports Director for KSHU and when Kevin and Charlie could no longer be apart of the station due to obligations to internships, he took over the show as the host. Andrew also puts together intros, beds, and the music for the show and has gotten many of the interviews.

In Summer 2009, Andrew interned at Sports Radio 610.

Fav teams: Rangers(MLB), Mavs(NBA), Rams(NFL), Stars(NHL)

Boggan

A junior at SHSU and a member of KSHU since 2008, Boggan came to the station looking to do an on-air talk show but at the time one was not available. Looking to get involved any way he could, he joined the play-by-play team. He has become a strong member of that team and when the opportunity became available to have another host on the Sports Fix in the Fall of 2008, Boggan's name was at the top of the list. He brings strong opinion and knows a broad variety of sports. He has become a great asset to KSHU.

Fav teams: Rangers(MLB), Mavs(NBA), Cowboys(NFL), Stars(NHL)

O-fer new logo

The Detroit Lions lost 16 games in 2008 to set an NFL record. Though in the off season they have made a few moves to their roster to give fans the impression they are willing to try to win at least one game in the 2009 campaign. The team has brought in running back Maruice Morris, defensive tackle Grady Jackson and defensive back Phillip Buchannon.

With the additions to the team, still looking for a new identity, it was announced earlier in the off-season that the team would be getting a new team logo and script for 2009. It was to be unveiled at the Draft, but thanks to NFLshop.com, it has already been unveiled.

An 18-wheeler sporting the team's new logo and script appeared on the website a few days ago and until about 24 hours ago was taken down due to someone realizing what it had revealed. Here is the photo of the truck.

The changes have 'Bubbles', the lion with a cleaner mane and an uncowardly look.

The Sports Fix Audio - February 11, 2009

Thanks to everyone who tuned in today...another great show on 90.5 The Kat. Andrew here from the Sports Fix. As promised, just as the day expires, here is the audio from the show.

Amy Brown - First Base on SHSU Softball team

Ashton Mitchell - junior on SHSU Men's Basketball Team

Jay Busbee - Yahoo.com Sports NASCAR Blogger From The Marbles

OFF AIR - After interview recaps:

Amy Brown

Amy came in Wednesday a few hours before the show to interview with me and she was very nervous yet excited to talk about the team and the season. She had just found out that the evening's game against Texas A&M was to be pushed back an hour to 5:30pm so she was a little more relaxed and was not having to run around as much. We sat down and talked for a few minutes before the interview and I think she was expecting something a little different. I had no questions written out for her to look at. I had a crazy morning and was not 100% prepared, but many of my questions were in my head because I was looking forward to the interview all morning. So, as Amy sat there to be interviewed for the first time, I began pulling questions out of my ass. It worked pretty well. I think as we went along I became a little more nervous than she. I've always had the opinion that people who play sports are people to look up to, I have trouble just treating them like any other person. Not to mention when you have arguably the school's hottest student athlete sitting across from you, you can't help but be nervous. She had some great answers throughout and it didn't hurt when she is really easy to work with and tried hard to come up with the best answers. As we finished up the interview, the smile on her face was one of relief, I could tell, but I think she was also happy that she did it and she proceeded to ask if we could listen to it back.

We did listen to it as I hope you have as well. There were a few things that needed to be excluded, but overall I couldn't be less happy for her and for the show. We have had some great interviews, but I thought Amy's was up there with them. As for the game Wednesday evening, the team took on #5 Texas A&M at the Softball complex. I asked Amy off air about her spot in the batting order and thought she belonged in the 'three hole' and sure enough that is where she was on Wed. night. The Bearkats took an early 1-0 lead after Hailey Wiginton tripled to tripled to center field and scored on a single to right by Alex Survant. The Aggies tied in in the seventh on a solo home run by Holley Ridley. So extra innings were in store. The game went to the 14th inning where in the top of the inning, Alex Reynolds scored from first base on a single by Erin Glasco to give the Aggies their first lead. Brandi Crnkovic pitched a team record 14 innings striking out seven batters only giving up nine hits. The Kats stranded 18 runners on base. Amy Brown finished the game 1-for-7 with her hit coming in the bottom of the 14th inning in a valiant Bearkat game.

Thanks again to Amy Brown for the interview and best of luck to the Sam Houston State softball team this season!

Ashton Mitchell
I apologize for not having this interview available to those of you who are fans of Ashton Mitchell, Sam Houston State men's basketball, etc. I know we promised the interview and it did not work. I had the interview saved on my tape recorder and was trying to play it over the air, but it would not play. So here it is online for your listening pleasure. I was looking forward to this interview on Tuesday. I knew Ashton would be a great interview and he was. A class player on a class team playing for a class coach.

Boggan and myself show up to Johnson Coliseum late afternoon Tuesday as the team is wrapping up practice and wait to talk to him. The team is running a full court game simulation drill. They are looking pretty good. Team is passing the ball well, getting the ball to the basket and getting the shots to fall. As the team wraps up practice, it reminds me of the previous week when I watched a few minutes of the Sam Houston womens basketball team. They do a few situation drills then wrap it up with a meeting at mid court. After a 10 minute wait, Mitchell comes out and we get underway. I had spoken with Lance Pevehouse two weeks prior and he went out the next game and went scoreless, so I hoped I was not about to jinx our top player. The interview lasted 10 or so minutes, he seemed satisfied that practice went well and was excited about the game.

As for the game, Mitchell and the team got off to a very slow start. Points were few and far between and the Kats were down 26-20 at halftime. Both teams had issues pacing themselves as in the second half as scoring picked up, so did the foul calls. With just under nine minutes to play both teams would be shooting free throws the rest of the way. The Bearkats were down nine points, 52-43 with just under four minutes to play. A few three pointers including one by Ashton Mitchell get the team within four. A few turnovers on Nicholls State and Barkley Falkner scores and its a one point game with 14 seconds to play and the Bearkats have a chance to take the lead. Preston Brown is true with a 3 foot hook shot from the baseline and the Kats have their first lead of the game at 59-58. With 6.8 seconds to play, Justin Payne gets the inbound and travels the length of the floor on Mitchell. There was no help defense and Payne gets the shot to go with 0.5 to play. Mitchell's shot at the buzzer was no good. Mitchell had hit a shot at the buzzer of halftime. The team's 7-game winning streak was history. They travel to Corpus Christi to start another winning streak on Saturday.

Much thanks to Ashton Mitchell for giving us some time this week. Best of luck to him and the Sam Houston State Mens basketball team!

Jay Busbee
When I received the email reply from Jay, I honestly was surprised. He stated in his reply that it was "good to hear from me" and he was "looking forward to it." From that I had some pressure on my shoulders to put together a solid interview. I was not too worried. We had our first expert of the season coming in and I knew he would have some good stuff to say. So with the interview scheduled for mid afternoon on Tuesday and just receiving the email that night, I knew I had to come up with some good questions pretty quick. I tried my best. I sat in my 12:30 class and proceeded to write down all the quality questions that came to mind. I knew the interview would be fun. I like NASCAR, so does Boggan and this guy likes writing about it, I'm sure he also likes talking about it. I wrote out 13 questions for both Boggan and myself and I gave Jay a call. We started the interview and then that's when it happened. Boggan's first question throws it off. "Hey Mr. Busbee," he says before starting his question about Jimmie Johnson. Jay with the almost classic response. "Don't call me Mr. Busbee." So poor Boggan, thrown off by the lax shown by the blogger kinda stumbles into the question. We go through the interview and have a good time. I come up with a few more questions on the spot like I usually do and it ends on a grand note. We wrap up with Jay dropping a liner for the show and thank him again. Great interview.

Thanks again Jay Busbee for a great interview and everyone log on to FROMtheMARBLES.com

Episode 1- Boggan Meets his Match

List of Things to Accomplish in Life
1. Get happily married and live a successful life.
2. Have a famous sports show on the radio
On the way home one day while coming back home from God knows where, I was "star struck" for the first time. You know what I'm talking about. Being "star struck" is that time when the famous person you admire and adore most walks right in front of you, and instead of yelling out one of the million questions you've always wanted to ask him/her if given the chance, you say,"HEY!......You rock!". And then they walk away, looking at you as if you just morphed into Sean Bradley right before their eyes. Well, my lifeless suscribers, let me enlighten you about my first "star strickening"......
Like I said before, I was on the way home from doing something incredibly stupid that I dont even remember, when suddenly my eyes locked on to a nearby Mr. Gatti's. I'm not sure if you know what a Mr. Gatti's is, but at my best attempt to define it, I would consider it the greatest pizza since one of those Pizza Hut/Long John Silver's on the corner of your nearest neighborhood. But this wasn't your ordinary Mr. Gatti's.
While waiting in line for the buffet, I noticed a variety of colors glimmering in the corner of my eye. When I turned my head, I became as excited as a 2nd grader from 1994 receiving tickets to a Spice Girls concert. In a small room in the back corner of the pizza shop was a melee of arcade games all lined up in a single file, including the game "NFL Blitz 99'". "Blitz 99'" is the game that is completely opposite of what an actual football game should be: 6 players for each team on the field at one time, 2 minute quarters, starting every first down with a "1st and 20", and breaking the rules is more encouraged than illegal. Even though I had been starving all day, I figured that a round of Blitz would be more fulfilling than 3 slices of their only option left at the buffet table, taco pizza(Does anyone actually eat that stuff?).
As I began to place my quarters in the coin slot, the double doors leading into the kitchen verociously swung open. When all the smoke and steam from the ovens had cleared, I looked back and noticed a man was heading straight towards me. To make this story more intriguing, I want to tell you that this man was wearing a cowboy hat, wranglers, was built like Mike Tyson, and had facial hair that would even make Pau Gasol stop what he was doing and stare in awe. But if I told you that, it would make this true event seem fictional. So, in all honesty, the man that was pacing towards me looked like Frankie Stechino from "Boy Meets World"(the character who speaks like Walt Whitman but was the size of former wrestler Vader) with an apron. When he finished his intimidating, yet histerical, approaching, he started talking about how he is 51-0 at the game and noone has even come close to defeating him. If this wasn't an invitation sent from God to shut someone up, I don't know what is. Besides, how good could this guy really be?
Pre-game Selections
We both pressed the "Start" button. The game asked," Would you like to keep your record?". While I pressed "No", I caught Frankie typing "W-I-L-L" into the word bank, "1-2-3-4" into the password bank, and finally he accessed his record. He was right. 51-0. I was beginning to shake. As we scrolled down the list of teams to choose from, he beat me to The Cowboys. How obvious of a choice is that, though? Irvin, Aikman, and Smith all rolled into one on a videogame. I havn't seen a selection that easy since the Yes/No question of "Will Michael Jordan lead the Wizards to a championship?". Disgruntled, I opt to pick the Buccaneers. I feel like I can beat the triplet with John Lynch, Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice, Dexter Jackson, and Warrick Dunn.
1st Quarter
I won the coin toss. I didn't know why Shelton Quarles was returning kicks, but I had no choice but to use him. Once I juked out Larry Allen(on special teams??) and Irvin, I pressed the turbo button, only to get hit and fumble on the 40. "Thats alright, though," I told myself,"I'll just have to score on defense." Frankie hiked the ball. He strafed Aikman sideways, lateralled the ball to Emmitt on the left side of the field, and threw a 60 yard touchdown pass to Irvin on the right side of the field. Extra point good. After a 60 yard kickoff return, I'm feeling confident going into the second quarter.
2nd Quarter
Two minutes and a fumble later, I'm driving on my own 40. I felt morbid once i noticed Shaun King was my quarterback. After two straight completions and an 8 yard run, I'm on my his 20, about to tie the game. I hike the ball to King. He takes a seven step drop and throws to Joe Jurvicious in the endzone. Interception. It only took him three more plays to score again, making the game 14-0. In an attempt to get myself pumped up, I start humming "We Like to Party" by the Venga Boys. But, on the kickoff return, Quarles fumbled again, this time on the oppositions 30. On the next play, Emmitt carried the ball for a 30 yard touchdown run, making me feel like the 76 Buccaneers, going into halftime with the score 21-0.
3rd Quarter
Four minutes, 21 points, 2 fumbles, and an interception later, I know I have to get a defensive stop to have any chance at all to beat Frankie. Once I kicked the ball off and Irvin broke four tackles, though, I realized he just returned it 96 yards for another touchdown. This is starting to become pathetic. I've decided I'm just going to run out the clock for the rest of the game to save myself some dignity.
4th Quarter
Six minutes, 28 points, 2 fumbles, and an interception later, I've almost done it. Warrick Dunn is averaging 2.5 yards a carry and not looking back. With a little under a minute left, all I have to do is reach the 30 yard line and kick a field goal to not give Frankie the joy of shutting out his 52nd opponent. I hand the ball off to Dunn once more, and jump in excitement because he does better than planned. With ten seconds left, the clock is still ticking. I'm on my own 29. I anxiously wait to point and laugh in Frankie's face as he defeats me 28-3. I hike the ball. The kick is up........
Eight minutes, 28 points, 2 fumbles, 1 interception, a missed field goal, and one slice of taco pizza later, I walk out of Mr. Gatti's with no pride left. Who was this mytholigical creature who sat behind a stove? Maybe I'll never know this mans real name, but I do know one thing is certain:
List of Things to Accomplish in Life
1. Get happily married and live a successful life.
2. Have a famous sports show on the radio
3. Defeat the infamous cook from Mr. Gatti's at "NFL Blitz 99'"

The Sports Fix - February 4, 2009

Hello everyone, this is Andrew from the Sports Fix. We had a great show for those of you lucky enough to tune in Wednesday from 3pm-6pm. After discussing the Super Bowl commercials, we dove into NBA talk including if we thought LeBron James would exceed Kobe's 61 points at Madison Square Garden. We all concluded he would get close, but not pass.

Boggan, Jimmy and I moved on to the Super Bowl and the greatness that was the 43rd edition of the big game. What is next for Big Ben and the Steelers as well as Kurt Warner and his career.

We then dove into Sam Houston State sports as Wednesday was national signing day across the country. The football team brought in 24 new faces. Softball steps up to bat this Saturday and we previewed the basketball teams games against UTSA.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sam Houston State women's basketball player Britni Martin after practice on Tuesday to speak about Wed's game and about her time thus far as a Bearkat.
